The Walvis Bay Cluster won the 2019 Bank Windhoek Coastal Math's Challenge championships. They achieved this at the challenge's second and final round which took place on Wednesday, 10 July 2019 in Swakopmund.The second and final round consisted of three papers: an individual Speed Test, Multiple Choice Test and a Team Test, which saw grade 8, 9 and 10 learners from the Walvis Bay and the Swakopmund cluster schools compete for the top prize. A total of 72 learners from 14 different schools took part in the second and final round.
“Bank Windhoek believes that by investing in the Coastal Maths Challenge, we are investing in the future. There is a lot of speculation about the future of jobs and the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), but by being equipped with mathematics and problem solving as a core skill, the future looks bright for students. Congratulations to the organisers for a well-executed event," said André le Roux, PR Manager at Bank Windhoek.
Edwina Kamatoto from Walvis Bay Private High School, won gold in the grade 8's individual category. Sebastian Garrard from Private School Swakopmund took home the gold award in the grade 9's individual category while Dylan Kreiner also from Private School Swakopmund, walked away as the winner of the grade 10's individual category.
“I want to thank Bank Windhoek for coming aboard and sponsoring the Bank Windhoek Coastal Maths Challenge. With their help we were able to again continue with this long tradition challenging coastal schools to do their best in the competition," said Magret Courtney-Clarke, the initiator and organiser of the Bank Windhoek Coastal Maths Challenge.
For the third consecutive year, Private School Swakopmund, walked away as winners for the Best Performing School. Below are the full individual and team results:

The 2019 Bank Windhoek Coastal Maths Challenge overview
The aim of the competition is to expose learners to problem solving in a context of challenge and fun and to motivate teachers and learners to engage in problem solving activities on a more regular basis. Local mathematics teachers not affiliated to the participating schools, moderated the set papers which were based on international guidelines.
The Challenge consists of two Rounds. The first round, which comprises a multiple choice paper, was written at the participating schools in June. A total of 1 256 learners from seventeen coastal secondary schools participated in the first round. The best learners from each cluster then selected teams of 12 from each of grades 8, 9 and 10 to participate in the second and final round hosted in Swakopmund. Initiated in 2014, the annual Bank Windhoek Coastal Maths Challenge for Grade 8 to 10 learners between the Swakopmund Secondary Cluster and the Walvis Bay Secondary Cluster, is organised by Magret Courtney-Clarke of Orison Educational Services.
