Bank Windhoek introduces gamification experience to the media

Bank Windhoek recently hosted its annual Media Year-End Function, bringing together 60 various media practitioners to celebrate a year of intense collaboration, impactful storytelling, and shared commitment to informing the Namibian public. This year’s event marked a noteworthy milestone as the Bank introduced a gamification element, an innovative twist designed to enhance engagement, financial and fraud education for the media.

The Bank’s innovative engagement utilised a unique gamified learning experience titled the "Balanced Banking Quest," designed to demystify the complex operational and strategic balancing acts within the financial sector. The engagement involved participants navigating seven interactive modules that utilised creative analogies to explain core banking principles. The goal was to move beyond surface-level reporting and equip the media with a deeper, more nuanced understanding of how banks operate, ensuring more informed public discourse.

The "Balanced Banking Quest" utilised a modern, interactive format to cover topics traditionally considered dense and technical. Modules included topics such as Regulation and Safeguards, using the analogy of "seat belts and airbags" in a car to explain the necessity and cost of regulatory compliance in protecting clients and the financial system. Participants were scored on their understanding, with the opportunity to win a grand prize of N$3,000 for the top three, adding a competitive element to the educational process.

Bank Windhoek’s Executive Officer of Marketing and Corporate Communication Services, Jacquiline Pack, said that the strategic intent behind the gamified experience was to foster a media environment that can report on financial matters with greater accuracy and depth. "Our commitment goes beyond providing banking services; it is about enabling our community to make informed financial decisions. By engaging the media in this innovative, transparent way, we are ensuring that the complex story of banking, the constant balancing act between profit, regulation, and social responsibility, is told accurately. This initiative is a testament to our belief that a financially empowered society starts with a well-informed media," said Pack.

Media attendees praised the Bank for blending entertainment with strategic engagement. For Wilma Iita, the gaming experience was informative, and the idea behind it revealed a few things she did not know about Bank Windhoek.

Emil Seibeb said the experience was positive and that the interactive game was particularly informative and engaging. “Although the media generally engages mainly with the public relations department, it would be refreshing to meet more of the Bank’s executives at such gatherings. Building relationships beyond corporate titles and formal jargon, even on a first-name basis, helps strengthen professional relationships and mutual understanding,” he said. Christine Venter, who was one of the three winners, said that the game was a great addition to the event. “It was well built, and the questions and answers were challenging enough to remain entertaining and keep the competition exciting,” she said.

Maggie Forcelledo said the gamification element was an excellent idea. “Sometimes we ought to forget some stuff and it is great to be reminded of how banks operate. It helps when reporting on financial matters. It was super informative, educational and fun,” she said. “Well done, Bank Windhoek.”

Focused on relationship-building, the annual event concluded with acknowledgements of outstanding collaboration, shared reflections on the year’s achievements, and renewed commitment to strengthening media partnerships in 2025 and beyond. Pack expressed gratitude for the media’s consistent support, professionalism, and dedication throughout the year. She stated that the partnership with the media is crucial for sharing the Bank’s vision, initiatives, and values with the nation.
