CFC 1 cements its lead in the Bank Windhoek National Fistball League

The second round of fixtures in the Bank Windhoek National Fistball League took place over the weekend at Cohen Fistball Club (CFC) in Windhoek. Hosts, CFC 1, put up a great performance, which saw them, extend their lead to four points at the summit of the log table. 

As it stands, CFC and Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) teams occupy the top four positions in the Bank Windhoek National Fistball League, with CFC 1 and SKW 1 taking up the first and second positions while CFC 2 and SKW 2 sit in the third and fourth spots respectively.

In the group stages, the reigning champions, CFC 1, faced Swakopmund Fistball Club (SFC) and SKW 2 in Group A. CFC 1 who swept aside the other three contenders, won all their games with a 3:0 score line and dominated this group to claim the top spot. Second in this group was SKW 2 who won against both SFC teams. SFC’s first team secured a win against their counterparts and claimed the third place after the group stage.

Group B saw SKW 1 face the hosts CFC 2, 3 and 4. SKW 1 was no match for the host teams as they cruised to the top of the group by winning all of their fixtures. CFC 2 took second place after defeating their club mates.

CFC 1 and CFC 2 battled it out in the first semi-final. CFC 1 won with a final score of 2:0 in a match that went down to the wire. The second semi-final was a fierce contest between the two teams from SKW. After three long sets, SKW 1 finally advanced into the final with a 2:1 victory over SKW 2.

In the match for third place, CFC 2 managed a 3:1 win against SKW 2. CFC 3 took up the fifth place ahead of CFC 4, while the seventh spot went to went to SFC 1 after they defeated their counterparts SFC 2.

As anticipated, the final match of the day was between CFC 1 and SKW 1. This contest started on a balanced footing; however, CFC 1 was the better team and took advantage to gain a comfortable lead that they never gave away throughout the encounter. The first set ended 11:5 in favour of CFC 1. The second set once again went to CFC 1 who dominated this encounter and inflicted another defeat onto SKW 1 who had no chance of reply and lost 11: 3. The third set was again exciting as SKW’s Michael Baas scored points with his service repeatedly. In the end, CFC 1 also won this set 11:9 and thus secured another 12 points in the league ranking. Christof Serrer and Bernhard Schurz, both from CFC 4, scoped the Player of The Day Awards.

The second round of the Bank Windhoek National Fistball League concluded with an announcement of the selected list of players who have made it into the Namibian National Team. The players are Götz Friedrich, Wilko Hoffmann, Rico Kühnle-Kreitz, Helmo Minz and Thilo Wilckens (all from Cohen FC). The foreign-based players in Germany are André Meng (Hamm SC 08), Tristan Minz (TSV Unterpfaffenhofen) and Gian Rudolph (MTV Vorsfelde). Stefan Grögli and Stephan Zimny will lead the team as the Coach and Manager respectively. Harald Bartsch of Varta also sponsored shirts from the Rhino Anti-Poaching Campaign.

The team will represent Namibia at the upcoming World Championships Tournament scheduled to take place in Winterthur, Switzerland in August. Below are the team placement and log standings after the second round:
