Mariental, the administrative capital of the Hardap Region, became a hub of concentration, strategy and competitive spirit on Saturday, 25 July 2026, when 37 chess players gathered at River Chalets for the Bank Windhoek 2026 Mariental Open, Grand Prix Leg X.
The tournament brought together established competitors, promising juniors and enthusiastic local players, showcasing the growing reach of chess across Namibia’s regions. As the tenth leg of the 2026 Bank Windhoek Grand Prix series, the Mariental Open demonstrated how sustained support for the game is creating opportunities for players of different ages and backgrounds to test their skills, build confidence and compete on a national platform.
Across the boards, participating players delivered a day of disciplined competition and memorable performances. Revian Willemse produced the tournament’s most commanding display in the Open Section, finishing first with a flawless 7/7 score. Israel Shilongo followed in second place with 6/7, while Tapiwanashe Katsvara secured third place with 5/7.
In the Women’s Section, Naletti Nkokwena claimed the gold medal, with Penny Shilongo taking silver and Amoricha Boois earning bronze. The junior players also underlined the depth of emerging chess talent, with Cecil Van Rhyn winning the Junior Section ahead of Mario Boos and Antonio Hawaseb.
The Cadet Section was equally competitive, with Damion Aribeb taking first place, followed by Victory Wilhelm and Andy Boois. Adding to the significance of the event for the host town, Matthew Kasonde was recognised as the Best Local Player. This proud moment celebrated homegrown talent from the Mariental community.
Partnerships powering regional growth
The Namibia Chess Federation expressed its appreciation to Bank Windhoek for its continued sponsorship of the Grand Prix series and its commitment to advancing chess development in
Namibia. The support has helped expand the sport's national footprint and enabled more players to participate in competitive events beyond the capital.
The Federation also extended its gratitude to the Roussow family for providing the River Chalets venue, which created a welcoming and professional setting for players, officials and supporters. Special recognition was given to Abraham Kasonde, Chairperson of the Hardap Regional Chess Association, for his leadership and organisation, as well as to the coaches, arbiters, parents and volunteers whose contribution ensured the smooth running of the event.
The 2026 Mariental Open reinforced the importance of taking competitive chess to communities across the country. With strong participation, standout individual achievements and visible local support, Grand Prix Leg X added further momentum to the Namibia Chess Federation’s mission to grow the game and nurture chess excellence in every region.
