Bank Windhoek Men's National Outdoor League
The experienced men's teams of Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS) and Windhoek Old Boys Sports Club (WOBSC) clashed in a very entertaining Premier League match on Wednesday evening at the WHS turf. DTS managed to score early with a goal by Percy Bartham. However, WOBSC fought back and Siyabonga Martins scored an equaliser. Near the end of the second quarter DTS re-took the lead by a field goal scored by Jurgen von der Fecht. The third quarter saw WOBSC countering numerous attacks in the half of DTS and eventually scored the second equaliser by Dirk Basson, converting a very good through ball in the opponent's circle. The consistent pressure of WOBSC paid off when they successfully converted with a goal scored by Windson Husselmann just before the end of the third quarter to go in the lead. A very determined DTS team came into the fourth and last quarter, putting pressure on the WOBSC defense. Their pressure resulted in getting a penalty corner against WOBSC which was then converted by Jason Bolton. The match ended in a draw 3-3, which was a fair reflection of the game as neither team deserved to lose this encounter.
On Saturday afternoon the Wanderers men's team played against a very determined UNAM team at the WHS turf. The young UNAM team started the encounter with a fast pace and imposed pressure early in the get the upper hand in the first quarter. However, UNAM could not manage to convert any of their chances in the first half. Things changed in the third quarter of the game when Wanderers took control of the match and their pressure on the UNAM defense paid off when they took the lead by a goal from Nicol Loftie-Eaton. UNAM managed to get back into the game in the last quarter and Kave Tjikuniva scored the well-deserved equaliser just before the end of the match. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
On Saturday evening, the young Saints team played their second encounter of the week against WOBSC. Efforts by Siyabonga Martins and Dylan Barnard went astray and could not be converted into goals. Saints also managed a few chances in the second quarter in the circle of WOBSC but failed to score. The only goal came in the last quarter of the match which was scored by Nico Neethling of Saints. The excellent performance of the Saints goalkeeper, Richter van Rooyen, kept the constant attacks of WOBSC under control and defended his goal successfully against every shot from his opponents. This thrilling match went down to the wire with a few last chances by WOBSC. The match ended in a 1-0 win for the Saints team and they still remain on top of the log without any losses or draws.
Bank Windhoek Women'ss National Outdoor League
The UNAM Women's first team, without key players, played against their young Saints counterparts on Friday evening in a hard-fought game. In an evenly contested game, where neither team could get the upper hand, the match went from one end to the other with both teams not taking advantage of their chances and converting these in goals. Poor finishing touches by both teams in the opponent's circle cost them. It was only in the second half that Saints eventually broke through the UNAM defense and Caitlin Gillies managed to score a goal. The match ended in a 1-0 win for Saints, making them undefeated in the current Bank Windhoek Women's Premier League.
Thereafter, the Wandreres Women's team played against DTS and took control of the match from the first quarter. Their dominating play of Wanderers paid off and after 10 minutes of the game the first goal was scored. Wanderers managed to score 8 goals during the match. The goal scorers for Wanderers were 5 goals by Bianca Muller, 2 by Vanessa Troh and one by Juanne Engelbrecht. The young DTS team was no match for the experienced Wanderers team and could not score a goal. The match ended 8-0 in favour of the Wanderers Women's team.
The Bank Windhoek National Outdoor League of the 2019 season will continue during the coming week with Premier League matches on and Friday Wednesday evening, and Saturday afternoon in the Men's & Women's divisions WAP and Windhoek Gymnasium turfs.
